Proposed Library Closures

What is proposed by the strategy?

  • £653,000 cutback in spending on libraries countywide, imposed by massive cuts in central government funding to local authorities
  • Future spending to focus only on ‘priority needs’ rather than ‘demand’
  • Seven libraries to be closed including Pevensey
  • Cutbacks in hours of remaining libraries
  • More investment in the eLibrary,
  • Closed libraries will be offered to new occupants to generate income
  • The Home Library Service for the housebound, run by volunteers, will continue (if volunteers can still be found)
  • A new Children’s and Young People’s Offer to support literacy  - details are vague
  • Increased ‘outreach work’ most disadvantaged communities - details are vague
  • ‘Community’ card enabling a designated person to provide a selection of books
  • Discussions with those communities threatened with library closure if they have alternative proposals for continuing those libraries
  • A 12 week consultation ending mid-December, the results and final proposals will go to their committee in March to be implemented in the next financial year beginning in April
